Según la tradición, los cuatro hijos Aymon (los cuatro hijos indígenas) Renaud, Richard, Alard y Guichard, fueron perseguidos durante su viaje a través de las Ardenas y, al no poder sortear la roca de coníferas debido a las crecidas del Mosa, se vieron obligados a montar a caballo, lo que hicieron con su magnífico caballo 'Bayard'. De ahí el nombre.
En realidad, ya existía un pequeño espolón rocoso, pero Luis XIV hizo excavar más el roca para permitir el fácil paso de su ejército. Este paso fue luego ampliado para facilitar la circulación de vehículos.
En la roca hay una placa conmemorativa que indica que el rey Alberto I de Bélgica escaló la roca.
La roca mide 35 m de altura.
