Secondo la tradizione, i quattro figli Aymon (i quattro bambini indigeni) Renaud, Richard, Alard e Guichard furono inseguiti durante il loro viaggio attraverso le Ardenne e, non potendo aggirare la roccia di conifere a causa delle piene della Mosa, furono costretti a montare a cavallo, cosa che fecero con il loro magnifico cavallo 'Bayard'. Da qui il nome.
In realtà, esisteva già un piccolo spuntone roccioso, ma Luigi XIV fece scavare ulteriormente la roccia per consentire il passaggio agevole del suo esercito. Questo passaggio fu poi ampliato per permettere la circolazione stradale.
