Selon la tradition, les quatre fils Aymon (les quatre enfants indigènes) Renaud, Richard, Alard et Guichard, furent pourchassés lors de leur périple à travers les Ardennes et, faute de pouvoir contourner la roche de conifères à cause des crues de la Meuse, ils ont été contraints de monter à cheval, ce qu'ils ont fait avec leur magnifique cheval 'Bayard'. D'où le nom.
En réalité, un petit éperon rocheux existait déjà, mais Louis XIV fit creuser davantage le rocher pour permettre le passage aisé de son armée. Ce passage a ensuite été élargi pour permettre la circulation routière.
Sur le rocher se trouve une plaque commémorative indiquant que le roi Albert Ier de Belgique a escaladé le rocher
Le rocher mesure 35m de haut.
