Desde 1910 ha habido actividad de vuelo ininterrumpida. Kiewit es unos meses mayor, pero no ha estado activo durante casi cincuenta años desde la década de 1920. El aeropuerto es parte de la base militar de Maria-ter-Heide, que forma parte de la cintura de fuertes alrededor de Amberes. Junto al aeropuerto hay un extenso campo de ejercicios, que ahora se utiliza en su mayoría como área natural. Había una conexión ferroviaria militar desde Kapellen que tenía una plataforma de carga para tanques cerca del aeropuerto.
El 16 de abril de 1913 se fundó en Brasschaat el primer Escuadrón de la 'Compagnie des Aviateurs', antecesor de la Fuerza Aérea Belga.
La abreviatura del aeropuerto es EBBT y es la base de operaciones permanente para el aeropuerto de Deurne. Frecuencia de radio: 122.9.
