La tumba de Ernest Claes y Stephanie Vetter en el cementerio de la abadía de Averbode. Ernest Claes se hizo famoso por el libro De Witte, una novela regional sobre un travieso en un estilo humorístico. En Flandes, fue uno de los escritores más leídos. Algunas de sus obras fueron publicadas bajo el seudónimo G. van Hasselt. Claes nació en una familia de agricultores con nueve hijos. Su madre y su padre tenían que trabajar duro y ambos eran descendientes de generaciones de familias de agricultores en Zichem. De niño, a veces era perezoso, terco y desobediente. En la escuela, durante el tiempo de castigo, leía en De Leeuw van Vlaanderen, una obra de Hendrik Conscience.
