La Batalla del Ijzer fue una batalla en la Primera Guerra Mundial que comenzó el 18 de octubre y terminó el 31 de octubre de 1914.
El 12 de octubre de 1914, los alemanes entran en Gante y al día siguiente ondea la bandera alemana en el ayuntamiento. Los británicos asumen posiciones defensivas al norte de Ypres a partir del 14 de octubre de 1914. En los días siguientes, las tropas francesas y belgas se posicionan detrás del Ijzer y el Ieperlee. Exhaustos, se atrincheran en trincheras de emergencia bajo la promesa de sus superiores de regresar pronto a casa. El 16 de octubre de 1914, las tropas de reconocimiento alemanas llegan a Diksmuide y ya al día siguiente estas inician el ataque, que es rechazado con éxito por los fusileros marinos franceses.
