Maurice Calmeyn comenzó en 1902-1903 a plantar 55 ha de bosques en las dunas de De Panne. Con esto quería demostrar que era posible plantar árboles cerca del mar. Calmeyn tenía en mente los lujosos y exitosos balnearios de Paris-Plage (Francia) con sus planes de reforestación. La mayor parte del bosque Calmeyn (46 ha) pertenece ahora a la Sociedad Intercomunal de Abastecimiento de Agua de Veurne-Ambacht (IWVA). El bosque es de libre acceso a través de los senderos.
