Maurice Calmeyn a commencé en 1902-1903 à planter 55 ha de forêt dans les dunes de De Panne. Il voulait démontrer qu'il était possible de planter des arbres près de la mer. Calmeyn avait en tête la station balnéaire luxueuse et réussie de Paris-Plage (France) avec ses projets de reforestation. La plus grande partie de la forêt Calmeyn (46 ha) appartient désormais à l'Intercommunale des Eaux de Veurne-Ambacht (IWVA). La forêt est librement accessible via les sentiers de randonnée.
