Maurice Calmeyn startte in 1902-1903 met het aanplanten van 55 ha bos in de duinen van De Panne. Hij wou hiermee aantonen dat het mogelijk was om bomen aan te planten dicht bij de zee. Calmeyn had met zijn bebossingsplannen de luxueuze en succesvolle badplaats Paris-Plage (Frankrijk) voor ogen. Het grootste deel van het Calmeynbos (46 ha) behoort nu toe aan de Intercommunale Waterleidingsmaatschappij van Veurne-Ambacht (IWVA). Het bos is vrij toegankelijk via de wandelpaden.
