El Fuerte de Steendorp fue construido según el diseño de Henri Alexis Brialmont entre 1883 y 1890 en el punto más alto de la paracuesta de Waasland, lo que era de importancia estratégica para proteger el Escalda y la desembocadura del Rupel con fuego de artillería.
