Het Fort van Steendorp is naar ontwerp van Henri Alexis Brialmont tussen 1883 en 1890 gebouwd op het hoogste punt van de paracuesta van het Waasland, wat van strategisch belang was om de Schelde en de monding van de Rupel met artillerievuur te beschermen.
