Il Forte di Steendorp è stato costruito tra il 1883 e il 1890 secondo il progetto di Henri Alexis Brialmont nel punto più alto della paracuesta del Waasland, che era di importanza strategica per proteggere la Schelda e la foce del Rupel dal fuoco dell'artiglieria.
