Las dos zanjas de Eeklo son excavaciones que surgieron porque en 1925 se necesitaba suelo para elevar una parte de la poldere Eeklo. Las zanjas son bastante profundas. El gran estanque tiene una profundidad máxima de 21 m, el pequeño estanque tiene aproximadamente 12 m de profundidad. Ambas zanjas tienen paredes casi verticales de arcilla, en las que a ciertas profundidades (de 5 a 10 m) aún aparecen niveles de fósiles reconocibles. Por ello, son especialmente atractivas para los buceadores e incluso uno de los lugares de buceo más populares en Flandes.
