El nombre original de la zona, ‘Ter Rivieren’, hace referencia a la ubicación de la finca junto al río Groot Schijn. La finca original data del siglo XVI. En el siglo XVII, la zona perteneció durante casi un siglo a los jesuitas. Cuando la orden fue disuelta, la finca fue vendida públicamente en 1773 y pasó a manos de un banquero. Junto con el Sterckshof, casi toda la zona fue reorganizada en 1776. Se plantaron arboledas de hayas y tilos, se creó un estanque en forma de espejo y se instalaron varios elementos estéticos y lúdicos como jardines ornamentales y un laberinto. El estanque espejo se encuentra en el corazón del parque, en la intersección de dos ejes estructurales, uno en dirección norte-sur y otro en dirección este-oeste.
