El área de anclaje 'Valles de Dijle y Laan al sur de Lovaina' abarca el valle de la Dijle aguas arriba de Lovaina hasta la frontera con Valonia en Ottenburg, y el valle de la Laan, desde su desembocadura en la Dijle hasta la frontera lingüística en Overijse. El área de anclaje se encuentra a lo largo del tramo medio de la Dijle. En esta parte, la Dijle es un río que meandering fuertemente con un alto caudal básico. Dentro del área de anclaje, el río ha sido en gran medida dejado libre para buscar su camino a través del valle y aún tiene un carácter en su mayor parte intacto, lo que es bastante único en Flandes.
