Que haya una lámpara de minero en la estación de Tollembeek no es casualidad. Desde Galmaarden, Viane, Herne y Tollembeek, muchos habitantes partieron a mediados del siglo pasado hacia Valonia para trabajar en las minas. Los llamaron los fossemannen. Pascal Verbeken lo describe maravillosamente en su libro Grand Central Belge: "Eran extraños en su propia comuna y extraños en Valonia". Describe cómo el residente Jozef Agneessens se dirigía diariamente a la mina de carbón de Monceau-Fontaine n°14 de Roux-Souvret cerca de Charleroi. Salía a las 4 de la mañana, iba en bicicleta a Tollembeek para tomar el tren allí a las 4:30. Luego en tren a través de Edingen, La Louvière, Piéton, Trazegnies y Roux. Luego a las 6:40 en bicicleta hacia Souvret. A las 7 se bajaba en el ascensor. Se trabajaba hasta las tres. Y luego de regreso a casa.
