Dat er een mijnwerkerslamp aan het station van Tollembeek staat is niet toevallig. Vanuit Galmaarden, Viane, Herne en Tollembeek vertrokken halverwege vorige eeuw heel wat inwoners naar Wallonië om er te gaan werken in de mijnen. Ze werden de fossemannen genoemd. Pascal Verbeken beschrijft het prachtig in zijn boek Grand Central Belge: "Ze waren vreemden in hun eigen gemeente en vreemden in Wallonië". Hij beschrijft hoe inwoner Jozef Agneessens dagelijks naar de steenkoolmijn van Monceau-Fontaine n°14 van Roux-Souvret nabij Charleroi trok. Hij vertrok om 4 uur 's ochtend, reed met de fiets naar Tollembeek om daar om 4:30 de trein te nemen. Dan per trein via Edingen, La Louvière, Piéton, Trazegnies en Roux. Dan om 6:40 op de fiets naar Souvret. Om 7 uur werd er afgedaald met de liftkooi. Tot drie uur werd er gewerkt. En dan terug naar huis.
