Esta fortaleza fue construida en 1584, en plena Guerra de los Ochenta Años. La orden vino del comandante Alexander Farnese. Por encargo del rey español, intentó someter a los Países Bajos rebeldes nuevamente bajo su control. Con un puente de barcos, la fortaleza de San Martín fue conectada con la fortaleza de San Felipe, al otro lado del Escalda. Así, Farnese cortó el suministro de Amberes. Su plan tuvo éxito: en 1585, Amberes tuvo que rendirse.
