Hasta principios del siglo XX, Liedekerke era una comunidad agrícola con pequeñas explotaciones agrícolas que se centraban principalmente en la autoabastecimiento. Los cultivos principales eran centeno, guisantes, trigo, patatas y lúpulo.
Debido al considerable crecimiento de la población en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, las pequeñas explotaciones agrícolas se fueron dividiendo cada vez más, de modo que alrededor del cambio de siglo la mayoría de las familias se vieron obligadas a ganar un ingreso adicional: las mujeres como encajeras a domicilio o trabajadoras en un taller textil, los hombres como alfareros en una de las alfarerías del valle de Dender. En 1896, 701 mujeres estaban activas como encajadoras.
