Aunque la pequeña ciudad de Aywaille cuenta con poco más de ocho mil habitantes, ocupa un lugar central en la región. Aywaille también es un importante nudo de carreteras: a veces se le llama la puerta de la Ardena de Lieja. Muy cerca de allí, en las alturas de La Reid o del Heid des Gattes, hoy reserva natural, austriacos y franceses libraron en 1794 una de sus numerosas batallas.
