De un documento del año 1187, redactado para el conde de Flandes, sabemos que en ese momento había una gran vasta área de pantanos en los alrededores de Aardenburg. Fuentes posteriores revelaron que esta área, con abundante turba en el subsuelo, abarcaba toda la parroquia de Sint-Laureins. Margareta de Constantinopla dio en la segunda mitad del siglo XIII el permiso para extraer esa turba. Al mismo tiempo, las repetidas inundaciones también contribuyeron en gran medida a dar a esta zona agrícola su forma actual.
