El canal Passendale-Nieuwpoort tiene una larga historia a sus espaldas. En 1623 fue oficialmente inaugurado por los archiduques Alberto e Isabel. El objetivo original del canal era conectar los puertos de Nieuwpoort, Ostende y Dunkerque a través del interior.
