Hasta la disolución del ducado de Limburgo, Lontzen formaba parte del ducado. El lugar estaba situado en la frontera de los altos bancos limburguenses de Montzen y Walhorn. Al igual que el resto del ducado, Lontzen fue incorporado al departamento de Ourthe, que se formó tras la anexión de los Países Bajos del Sur por la República Francesa en 1795.
