La Puerta de Schaerbeek fue elegida en 1864 como lugar de inicio para un vuelo en globo por Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, alias Nadar. Las partes del globo se extendieron en el suelo del palacio de vidrio vecino de los Jardines de Hierbas. Anteriormente, Nadar ya había realizado algunos vuelos en París, sobre el Champ de Mars. Ahora estaba aquí para animar las fiestas nacionales belgas (que entonces se celebraban en otoño). Entre los invitados estaban, entre otros, Leopoldo I, Jules Anspach (el entonces alcalde de Bruselas) y el escritor Charles Baudelaire. Nadar utilizó vallas para garantizar la seguridad de los transeúntes. Aún se habla en Bélgica de un nadarafsluiting. El hombre mismo no podía reírse de esta denominación y escribió incluso una carta al rey belga al respecto.
