El poeta flamenco de habla francesa Emile Verhaeren, originario de Sint-Amands, perdió la vida el 27 de noviembre de 1916 en un accidente de tren en la estación de Rouen. Fue enterrado inicialmente en el cementerio de Adinkerke y luego trasladado a Wulveringem. El 9 de octubre de 1917, sus restos mortales fueron depositados en su monumental tumba junto al Escalda.
El monumento, construido según un diseño del arquitecto Louis Van der Swaelem (1883-1929), está situado en la línea de agua del Escalda y se asemeja a un barco amarrado. Por lo tanto, vive como si fluyera con la corriente.
En 1955, con motivo del centenario del poeta, se inhumó en la tumba a Marthe Massin, quien sobrevivió a su esposo hasta 1931. El monumento fue significativamente ampliado y adaptado por el arquitecto Jan Lauwers. En 2008, el monumento funerario fue restaurado y elevado a un nivel más alto para protegerlo de inundaciones.
Al otro lado de la dike se encuentra el Jardín Marthe Massin con la escultura 'Tiempos de amor' de Jan Mees.
