Le poète flamand francophone Emile Verhaeren, originaire de Sint-Amands, a perdu la vie dans un accident de train à la gare de Rouen le 27 novembre 1916. Il a été initialement enterré au cimetière d'Adinkerke puis transféré à Wulveringem. Le 9 octobre 1917, ses restes mortels ont été déposés dans son monument funéraire monumental sur l'Escaut.
Le monument, construit selon les plans de l'architecte Louis Van der Swaelem (1883-1929), est situé sur la ligne de flottaison de l'Escaut et ressemble à un bateau amarré. Ainsi, il vit en quelque sorte avec le courant.
En 1955 - à l'occasion du centenaire du poète - Marthe Massin, qui a survécu à son mari jusqu'en 1931, a été inhumée dans la tombe. Le monument a été sensiblement agrandi et adapté par l'architecte Jan Lauwers. En 2008, le monument funéraire a été restauré et élevé pour le protéger des inondations.
De l'autre côté de la digue se trouve le jardin Marthe Massin avec la statue 'Amour en temps' de Jan Mees.
