The French-speaking Flemish poet Emile Verhaeren, who came from Sint-Amands, died on 27 November 1916 in a train accident at Rouen station. He was initially buried in the cemetery of Adinkerke and later transferred to Wulveringem. On 9 October 1917, his remains were stored in his monumental grave monument on the Scheldt.
The monument, built to a design by architect Louis Van der Swaelem (1883-1929), is located on the waterline of the Scheldt and looks like a moored boat. In this way, it lives with the flow, as it were.
In 1955 - on the occasion of the poet's hundredth birthday - Marthe Massin, who survived her husband until 1931, was buried in the grave. The monument was considerably enlarged and adapted by architect Jan Lauwers. In 2008, the funerary monument was restored and raised to a higher level to protect it from flooding.
On the other side of the dike is the Marthe Massin Garden with the sculpture 'Love Tides' by Jan Mees.
