Kuurne ha estado históricamente conectado con el agua. Sin embargo, la conexión con el Leie se perdió con el tiempo. Ahora se intenta que el Leie sea nuevamente más visible y palpable. Las Leiemeersen, en la desembocadura del Heulebeek en el Leie, forman una de las últimas grandes áreas de espacio abierto en el valle del Leie dentro del área urbana de Kortrijk.
