Richard Depoorter nació en 1915 en Ichtegem. Fue un ciclista exitoso. Ganó, entre otras cosas, en dos ocasiones la clásica belga más antigua: Lieja-Bastoña-Lieja, La Doyenne. Pero falleció demasiado joven. En 1948, él era la esperanza belga de una victoria en el Tour.
