La Hoogpoort fue la primera calle de conexión entre el Escalda y el Leie. A orillas de ambos ríos surgieron a partir del siglo IX núcleos de población independientes, más o menos al mismo tiempo, y crecieron hacia el encuentro. En la época de Van Eyck, había una gran actividad en la Hoogpoort. Aquí habitaban sobre todo comerciantes ricos. En esta calle y en los alrededores se encontraban sus casas de piedra. Algunas estaban habitadas, pero a menudo solo eran almacenes para mercancías y una cartelera para los propietarios.
