Este visitante regular de nuestros estanques es la ave más conocida entre el gran público. Su nombre francés (‘colvert’) se refiere al color verde del collar del macho. El macho también se diferencia de la hembra por su collar blanco y su pico amarillo. El plumaje de la hembra es predominantemente marrón y beige. Al igual que el macho, la hembra tiene un espejo alar de un azul oscuro, una mancha de color en ambas alas. En general, los pájaros son sedentarios y a partir del otoño forman parejas durante el cortejo.
