El nombre del pueblo Fumal se menciona por primera vez en el siglo XII. Una parte del territorio pertenecía durante el antiguo régimen al principado de Lieja, otra parte al condado de Namur. Los habitantes del castillo eran siervos del Condado de Namur. A finales del siglo XVII, el castillo sufrió mucho por las numerosas guerras que asolaron la región. A principios del siglo XVIII, se desató un gran incendio. Jacques Mincé du Fontbaré reconstruyó el castillo. Sus descendientes todavía viven en la finca.
