La Sablière du Bois de Comblain consiste principalmente en arena blanca, amarilla y ocre, y algunas capas de arcilla de color púrpura. Este depósito de arena es parte de una depresión de piedra caliza carbonatada. La arena proviene del último mar que cubrió nuestra área hace unos veinticinco millones de años, durante el Terciario. De este último mar quedan pocos vestigios. La arena que se ha depositado en el fondo no está fosilizada. Tras la retirada del mar, el viento, la lluvia y, sobre todo, los ríos tuvieron libre curso para arrastrar la arena. En algunos lugares, la arena terciaria ha escapado a la erosión, como en este lugar único. La arena terciaria fue extraída por el ser humano. Y ahora, esta antigua cantera ha sido recolonizada por vegetación adaptada a este suelo arenoso. El suelo es muy pobre en sales minerales.
