Nello y Patrasche son los personajes principales de la novela inglesa A Dog of Flanders de 1872. La historia tiene lugar en Hoboken y Amberes. Entre otras cosas, la catedral de Nuestra Señora y las pinturas de Rubens desempeñan un papel importante en ella.
Nello, un pobre niño huérfano, hace amistad con Patrasche, un perro de tracción abandonado. Juntos van a la ciudad todos los días. Allí suelen visitar la catedral, donde Nello admira las pinturas de Rubens. Debido a una serie de contratiempos, la vida de Nello y Patrasche termina en la misma catedral. Mueren juntos de privaciones. En esta conmovedora y atípica historia navideña hay un mensaje de orgullo y amistad incondicional.
El artista Batist Vermeulen ('Tist') diseñó una nueva escultura del chico y su perro. Puedes admirarla en la Plaza de los Guantes, frente a la catedral.
