San Arnold de Tiegem nació alrededor de 1040. Al principio fue caballero, pero tras la muerte de su padre en 1070, ingresó como monje en Soissons, donde vivió como un ermitaño. Fue enviado dos veces a Flandes como pacificador.
En el siglo XV y más tarde, las reliquias fueron trasladadas a Tiegem, primero a la iglesia parroquial. Solo en el siglo XIX el culto se trasladó al bosque de Holdenbroek, rápidamente rebautizado como el bosque de la capilla. Allí había un manantial y una capilla. En 1817 llegó la pequeña capilla de San Arnold que todavía se encuentra allí.
En 1860 se inició la construcción de la gran capilla, y más tarde del lugar de peregrinación.
San Arnold es el santo patrón de los cerveceros.
