En 1269 Damme recibió el permiso del conde para drenar el agua del estanque del castillo de Malé.
Esto fue necesario debido al agua subterránea salobre debido a la presencia de agua de mar en la ciudad. Una tubería de plomo transportaba el agua potable desde los estanques del castillo desde Male hasta Damme a lo largo de 4 km . Las diversas fuentes y bombas de la ciudad estaban conectadas a la tubería. Una de esas fuentes se encuentra frente al Sint-Janshospitaal y se conoce como "'t Zeugsken".
En el siglo XIX se sustituyó la fuente por esta bomba.
