Nel 1269 Damme ricevette dal conte il permesso di drenare l'acqua dallo stagno del castello di Male.
Ciò si è reso necessario a causa delle acque sotterranee salmastre dovute alla presenza di acqua di mare in città. Un tubo di piombo trasportava l'acqua potabile dagli stagni del castello da Male a Damme per una distanza di 4 km . Alla condotta erano collegate le varie fontane e pompe cittadine. Una di queste fontane si trova di fronte al Sint-Janshospitaal ed è conosciuta come "'t Zeugsken".
Nel XIX secolo la fontana fu sostituita da questa pompa.
