1269 erhielt Damme die Erlaubnis des Grafen, das Wasser aus dem Burgweiher von Male abzulassen.
Dies war aufgrund des brackigen Grundwassers aufgrund des Vorhandenseins von Meerwasser in der Stadt erforderlich. Eine Bleileitung führte das Trinkwasser aus den Teichen des Schlosses von Male nach Damme über eine Distanz von 4 km . An die Leitung wurden die verschiedenen städtischen Brunnen und Pumpen angeschlossen. Einer dieser Brunnen befindet sich gegenüber dem Sint-Janshospitaal und ist als "'t Zeugsken" bekannt.
Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde der Brunnen durch diese Pumpe ersetzt.
