La capilla fue fundada entre 1850 y 1874 por la familia van Caloen , señores del señorío de Loppem.
En la capilla hay una estatua de San José con la inscripción "Gracias H. Jozef dos curaciones 1964".
San José ("San José") es el patrón de los carpinteros y trabajadores en general. También es el patrón de Bélgica y Canadá y es invocado como patrón de las vírgenes , las comunidades religiosas, los esposos, la familia y los moribundos.
La expresión "matrimonio de José" se deriva del matrimonio entre José y María, que la Iglesia Católica Romana en particular cree que nunca tuvo relaciones sexuales (y María permaneció virgen perpetuamente). Por lo tanto, el término se usa para una relación matrimonial espiritual, no sexual.
