El Veemarkt se mencionó por primera vez en 1293 cuando se construyó el Sint -Juliinusgasthuis.
En la primera mitad del siglo XIII , la plaza que hoy conocemos como Veemarkt aparentemente fue utilizada como basurero . Esto puede explicarse por el hecho de que la plaza todavía estaba fuera del centro histórico de la ciudad. Probablemente también había algún tipo de cabina de peaje o caseta de vigilancia. También había una fuente que fue demolida en 1672. La fuente fue reemplazada más tarde por una bomba coronada por una estatua de Neptuno a principios del siglo XVIII.
Sint-Romboutscollege y Sint-Pieters-en-Pauluskerk se encuentran en Veemarkt. La plaza fue reconstruida en 2005. No se incorporó hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XIII con la construcción de la nueva muralla (1264-1268).
