El Brusselpoort es un impresionante y enorme edificio del siglo XIII ubicado justo en el medio de la carretera de circunvalación de Mechelen.
La Puerta de la Ciudad Vieja es la más alta de las doce puertas que se construyeron como muralla de la ciudad. Por lo tanto, la puerta se llamó originalmente "Overste Poort". Otra puerta, la "Brusselse Poort" también se construyó durante este período . Cuando se demolió la antigua Brusselse Poort y la Nieuwe Steenweg de Bruselas llegó a Mechelen, se decidió cambiarle el nombre a "Overste Poort".
El Brusselpoort es el único que aún existe en Mechelen. Desafortunadamente, la puerta de hierro fue demolida ya en el siglo XVIII.
Brusselpoort sirvió como estación de policía , más tarde como sala de reuniones y estudio de arte del famoso artista Alfred Ost. Por un corto tiempo, el Brusselpoort se utilizó como museo municipal bajo el ala de los Museos Municipales de Mechelen.
