La palabra capilla deriva del latín cappa = manto, diminutivo de capella, y se refiere al manto de San Martín , obispo de Tours. San Martín regaló la mitad de su manto a un pobre; la mitad del manto se convirtió en reliquia y la habitación donde se guardaba se llamó por metonimia capella o capilla. A partir del siglo VII, capilla se convirtió en el nombre de un pequeño lugar de culto.
