En el segundo domingo de mayo, se lleva a cabo cada año la Kattestoet de Ypres. Hasta 1817, aquí se arrojaban gatos vivos desde el campanario. En 1938, se reintrodujo el lanzamiento de gatos con gatos de peluche.
La causa de esta tradición se dice que surgió en 962 cuando el Conde Boudewijn III dio la orden de arrojar cada año 3 gatos vivos desde las torres de la casa "De Korte Meers". Esto sería necesario para ahuyentar el mal. Esta idea no parece ser tan única, ya que también en la ciudad francesa de Amiens tienen esta tradición.
