Le deuxième dimanche de mai, la Kattestoet d'Ypres a lieu chaque année. Jusqu'en 1817, des chats vivants étaient jetés du beffroi. En 1938, le lancer de chats a été réintroduit avec des chats en peluche.
La raison de cette tradition remonterait à 962 lorsque le comte Baudouin III donna l'ordre de jeter chaque année 3 chats vivants des tours de la maison "De Korte Meers". Cela serait nécessaire pour repousser le mal. Cette idée ne semble pas si unique car cette tradition existe aussi dans la ville française d'Amiens.
