El paso del Simplon se encuentra a 2008 m. (o 6589 ft.). Conecta los Alpes Peninos y los Alpes Lepontinos en Suiza. Une Brig en el cantón de Valais con Domodossola en el Piamonte (Italia).
El paso adquirió importancia internacional durante la ocupación napoleónica. Entre 1801 y 1805, se construyó una carretera por orden del emperador para transportar piezas de artillería a través del paso entre el valle del Ródano y Italia. Desde entonces, el paso ha sido utilizable para diligencias y fue reemplazado a principios del siglo XX por autobuses postales.
El túnel de Simplon se construyó a principios del siglo XX cerca del paso para transportar el tráfico ferroviario entre los dos países.
