Il passo del Sempione si trova a 2008 m. (o 6589 ft.). Collega le Alpi Pennine e le Alpi Lepontine in Svizzera. Collega Brig nel canton Valais a Domodossola nel Piemonte (Italia).
Il passo acquisì importanza internazionale durante l'occupazione napoleonica. Tra il 1801 e il 1805, su ordine dell'imperatore, fu costruita una strada per trasportare i cannoni d'artiglieria attraverso il passo tra la valle del Rodano e l'Italia. Da allora il passo è utilizzabile per le diligenze ed è stato sostituito agli inizi del ventesimo secolo dagli autobus postali.
Il tunnel del Sempione fu costruito all'inizio del XX secolo nelle vicinanze del passo per trasportare il traffico ferroviario tra i due paesi.
