El Castillo de Wartburg está situado cerca de la ciudad de Eisenach, en el Estado federado de Turingia, Alemania, al borde de un precipicio de 410 metros al suroeste de la ciudad de Eisenach, que queda debajo. En el año 1999, fue proclamado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco como un «monumento sobresaliente del período feudal en la Europa Central», citando sus «valores culturales de significado universal».[1]
El castillo fue construido en 1067 por el landgrave de Schauenburg, Ludwig der Springer , de quien se contaba que había escapado de una alta torre saltando al vacío. Según una tradición burlona, el castillo obtuvo su nombre cuando su fundador vio por primera vez la colina sobre la que el Wartburg se encuentra actualmente; encantado con el lugar, supuestamente exclamó:
