El castillo de Braunfels se encuentra en una cima de basalto al oeste del balneario de Braunfels, en el distrito de Lahn-Dill, en Hesse central. Desde el siglo XIII, es sede de los condes de Solms y, aún en el siglo XXI, sigue siendo propiedad familiar de los condes de Oppersdorff en Solms-Braunfels.
El castillo de Braunfels domina el paisaje casi hasta el valle del Lahn y puede considerarse como un contrapunto paisajístico e histórico-cultural al castillo de Schaumburg en el valle inferior del Lahn. La ampliación y remodelación a fines del siglo XIX pertenece a una fase del historicismo creativo en elementos neogóticos, en la que se utilizaron intencionadamente formas propias. Como una de las remodelaciones de castillos más significativas del historicismo, Braunfels tiene una gran importancia a nivel regional.
