Il castello di Braunfels si trova su una collina di basalto a ovest della località turistica di Braunfels, nel distretto di Lahn-Dill, in Assia centrale. Dalla tredicesima secolo, è la sede dei conti di Solms ed è ancora nel XXI secolo di proprietà della famiglia dei conti di Oppersdorff di Solms-Braunfels.
Il castello di Braunfels domina il paesaggio fino alla valle della Lahn e può essere visto come un contrapunto paesaggistico e storico-culturale al castello di Schaumburg nella parte bassa della valle della Lahn. La costruzione e la ristrutturazione alla fine del XIX secolo appartengono a una fase di storicismo creativo con elementi neogotici, in cui sono forme proprie. Come uno dei più importanti ristrutturazioni di castelli dell' historicismo, Braunfels ha una grande importanza a livello interregionale.
