A través de un hallazgo en 1926, Vogelheim se hizo conocido a nivel regional, ya que con la cuchilla de Vogelheim se descubrió la herramienta humana más antigua de la región.
En la Edad Media, Vogelheim era una zona agrícola, que estaba esencialmente marcada por los castillos de agua y las mansiones de Heck y Horl. Esta primera colonización agrícola solo se desarrolló después de 1900 en un asentamiento minero. Con el cierre de la mina Emil-Emscher en 1973, comenzó un cambio estructural. Las áreas industriales se transformaron en polígonos industriales con empresas pequeñas y medianas de la industria y la artesanía. Además, los asentamientos industriales en el puerto de la ciudad, los dos hogares de ancianos y atención, así como el comercio mayorista y minorista, hoy ofrecen muchos empleos a los ciudadanos.
